Hall School Wimbledon

Independent co-education from 4 to 16

Sport

Sport features prominently in Hall School Wimbledon life. All of our children experience a wide variety of sporting activities through Games lessons, taught by specialist sports teachers who are highly accomplished sportsmen and women.

Pre-preparatory Games

From Reception to Year 2, the children concentrate on developing their ball skills, improving hand-eye coordination and building their confidence in preparation for traditional ‘public school’ sports such as rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis. They have up to four Games lessons a week.

In addition, every Thursday, Katherine Richardson BA (Hons) LRAD, ARAD from the Village School of Dance comes in to teach boys and girls in Reception and Year 1. They are taken on ‘mini adventures’ through creative movement. In Year 2, girls are taught the basic ballet steps and group routines for which they are encouraged to choreograph their own dance steps.

Preparatory Games

On average, children in Years 3 to 6 receive a total of eight hours of physical activity each week. This includes four to five Games lessons a week and 20-30 minutes of circuit training every morning before lessons begin.

Facilities

Onsite, the Junior School has two outdoor playgrounds marked for netball, hockey, basketball, tennis and five-a-side football as well as a gymnasium and a new sports / play facility called The Levels.

We take advantage of our easy access to Wimbledon Common for cross-country, and we also use King’s College Astroturf pitches. Within walking distance of the school we have the Richardson Evans Memorial Playing Fields, which provide a substantial grassed sports facility and pavilion for our children to use.

Fixtures

All children have the opportunity to play in competitive matches, in fixtures against other schools and in inter-house sports tournaments.

The older children have a weekly Games afternoon during which fixtures against other schools are usually played.

Hall School Wimbledon hosts the annual Inter-Schools Cross-Country Relay Tournaments in the Christmas Term. Approximately 12 local schools participate in both the Girls’ and Boys’ tournaments and each member of the relay team runs a lap around the picturesque Queensmere Pond on Wimbledon Common.

We currently hold the cup as winners of the Boys’ tournament and came fourth in the 2011 Girls’ tournament.

In March 2012, Hall School Wimbledon hosted its first inter-schools hockey tournament together with international hockey players, Rob Moore and Ben Marsden. Teams of boys and girls in Year 5 from local prep schools joined Hall School Wimbledon at KCS playing fields to compete for the title of tournament champions. Hall School Wimbledon made it to the final but then narrowly lost to Thomas’s Clapham to take the silver medals. Click here to read more about this tournament and to view a selection of photographs.
