Art

The Hall School Wimbledon Art syllabus provides a broad range of opportunities and training for our pupils through both two and three-dimensional projects. There is an emphasis on observational drawing as the basis of all projects. Art history and critical appreciation is taught as a complement to all projects.

An extensive range of activities, media and materials is available to develop the artistic skills of our pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9. Pupils undertake one project a term based on an artist or art movement, and over this period they will explore painting, printmaking, sculpture and textiles.

Art and Design GCSE

The Hall School Wimbledon Art Department follows the Edexcel Art and Design GCSE course, which comprises a personal portfolio and an examination in the form of an externally set assignment. Sketchbooks are an essential part of the coursework as they show the development of ideas and allow pupils to record visual information and analyse artists and their own work.

The course encourages personal, creative and imaginative approaches to Art and Design and allows pupils to work with both traditional and new media. It also prepares pupils for A Level and other Art and Design qualifications.

Art Trips

In order to provide pupils with a well-rounded Art education, Hall School Wimbledon makes full use of the many and diverse galleries London has to offer. Through the study of Art in a gallery, children may fully appreciate the use of scale, form and colour, as well as the vast array of styles.

In Years 7 to 9, pupils may visit local attractions such as Kew Gardens and the Horniman Museum and our GCSE Art pupils will additionally undertake day trips to cities such as Oxford.

Art Clubs

For those children with a keen interest in Art, there is a weekly Art Club available to all year groups during morning break. Children have the opportunity to experiment with a range of different materials such as batik, clay, stencil art, textiles and monoprinting. They can also work on individual projects under the guidance of an Art teacher. An after school Art Club is available to GCSE pupils.

A weekly Digital Photography Club, available to all year groups, provides an opportunity for pupils to learn how to use a digital camera, how to compose different shots and how to manipulate photographs using computer software.
