Hall School Wimbledon

Independent co-education from 4 to 16

Curriculum

Hall School Wimbledon prides itself on getting the best out of all its pupils. Our class sizes are small, allowing for generous individual attention, with an average teacher–pupil ratio of 1:9.

The aim of the Senior School curriculum is to offer a broad range of subjects for study to GCSE level whilst at the same time allowing pupils to specialise in their strengths. All children follow the ICET syllabus in Years 7 and 8 leading to Common Entrance at 13+.

Formal annual examinations are held for all year groups at the Senior School.

Preparatory Curriculum (Years 7 to 8)

In Years 7 and 8, children have a registration teacher and are taught by specialist teachers for all subjects. Individual lessons are between 45 and 60 minutes in:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Art
  • Design Technology
  • Drama
  • French
  • Games
  • Geography
  • German
  • History
  • Music
  • Religious Studies

In Year 7 the children are placed in sets for Mathematics. In Year 8 they are taught in sets for English, Mathematics and Modern Languages. In Year 9 setting is introduced in Science and English and Mathematics setting continues.

In Years 7 and 8, children continue with the School Homework System.

Pre-GCSE Curriculum (Year 9)

Year 9 pupils study all the subjects listed above and are also taught ‘Study Skills’ as a specific subject. As part of this subject all pupils are taught about different learning styles and are introduced to specific revision and examination techniques.

In Year 9, we begin teaching the Religious Studies GCSE course and the examination is taken in Year 10, which means that many Hall School Wimbledon pupils obtain one GCSE a year in advance.

All pupils in Year 9 sit Cognitive Abilities Tests devised by the NFER (National Foundation for Educational Research). These tests are used to provide a variety of data including GCSE predictors.

It is during this year that we support and advise pupils in making the important decisions about which other GCSE courses to follow. Individual subject teachers give GCSE presentations in class. This is followed by a GCSE Selection Parents’ Evening, which allows families to meet all teachers and discuss pupil choices. Subsequent tutorials are offered by the Head of Year 9 to refine and complete the pupils’ selection.
