Art is a popular and important part in the lives of all children at the Junior School. Creative sessions begin in Reception where the children learn basic skills and explore 3D media. From Year 1, our children begin their formal art education with a specialist teacher. We aim to provide children with a solid foundation in techniques and a keen interest in traditional and contemporary art. Above and beyond this, Art plays a vital role in building children’s creative confidence, helps quell any fears of being ‘wrong’ and encourages them to take risks. It teaches pupils that it is acceptable to think differently from others and to express one’s feelings and thoughts imaginatively. Praise, clear goal setting and the displaying of all pupil’s work helps achieve this and develops children’s creative courage. This is celebrated every year at the Junior School Art Exhibition, where every piece of work by every child is displayed. By discussing and interpreting artists’ work, children develop investigative skills and learn, where appropriate, about the underlying meaning that is being conveyed.
