Key Stage 5 at HSW: Supporting independence in the Sixth Form
In line with our whole-school commitment to inclusion and wellbeing, HSW Sixth Form provides a supportive yet empowering environment where students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and prepare confidently for life beyond school.
By the time young people reach Key Stage 5, they have developed the maturity, awareness, and self-belief to manage their learning with greater independence and our role becomes one of guidance, encouragement, and refinement. We see this stage as a bridge to adulthood, where students are supported to strengthen their academic confidence, emotional resilience, and sense of responsibility.
Our Sixth Form staff work closely with each student to help them balance their studies with personal growth. Support remains available where needed, whether through study skills sessions, mentoring, or one-to-one check-ins, but the emphasis is on developing autonomy and self-advocacy. Students are guided to plan effectively, manage their time, and communicate their needs as they prepare for higher education, employment, or other post-18 pathways.
For students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), provision continues in line with Section F, though it is delivered in a way that promotes independence and readiness for adulthood. We also maintain close communication with parents and external professionals to ensure continuity of care and support.
Our goal is that every young person leaves HSW as a confident, capable adult - academically prepared, emotionally grounded, and ready to take their next steps with pride and purpose.
