French is taught by a specialist teacher to all pupils from Year 5. Younger children are taught simple vocabulary through puppets, songs, stories and games. The children’s vocabulary and grammatical understanding are developed as they move up the school. The needs of children who are fluent French speakers are met by offering extension work in lessons and when possible, additional lessons outside the normal timetabled ones. Our priority is to nurture curiosity and knowledge about the world, as well as providing a focus on practical communication and creating the foundations of a lifelong learning journey.

The children take part in different events such as “la galette des rois”, “Mardi Gras” and “la journée française”. All these events are designed to learn more about and appreciate French culture, as well as fostering a love of language learning.
