Geography

We believe that the study of Geography is of central importance in our understanding of our place in the world. We aim to develop pupils’ enthusiasm to become lifelong learners and to foster an open-mindedness towards all peoples and cultures, as well as a sense of our own responsibilities to the world around us. The subject of Geography has evolved to incorporate the study of contemporary issues, often looking to understand how the natural and human worlds interact. Decision making and problem solving skills are honed through the study of opposing views on how to best balance our demand for finite resources and the need to ensure a sustainable future.

We run field trips around Wimbledon Common and Village for years 7, 8 and 9. During years 10 and 11 we branch out to one of a number specialist field studies centres in the UK.

Years 7, 8 & 9

Through the study of Geography during years 7, 8 and 9, pupils progress in understanding and in valuing the importance of the wider world to their own lives.

Our aim is to trigger their curiosity and a fascination in the diversity of the planet and its people.  They build on Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 to expand their knowledge, investigate places at all scales, from the local to the global. They learn to communicate their ideas and understanding, through maps, discussion, debate and writing. Finally they develop critical  thinking skills by studying different viewpoints and justify their own views in reaching conclusions.

Years 10 & 11

At GCSE we cover the AQA syllabus and build in current affairs and world news to complement the curriculum. The Physical Geography sections include the study of  tectonics, weather hazards, ecosystems, climate change and the physical landscapes of the UK. The Human Geography sections cover urban growth, the changing economic world, and the challenges of resource management. Through these topics pupils practice decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, numeracy, map skills and ICT skills.
