The Science curriculum at HSW Junior School aims to give pupils a firm foundation of scientific knowledge and understanding whilst affording them opportunities to develop scientific skills through investigation, observation and fair testing. They learn to design, carry out, observe and draw conclusions from experiments and are encouraged to work collaboratively, independently and creatively.
From Year 3 onwards the children have lessons with a specialist Science teacher in a well-equipped, dedicated classroom. The programme of study for each year group includes a unit of Biology, Chemistry and Physics spread across three terms.
There is a wide variety of reference books available for the children to use as they develop their scientific and thinking skills.
Trips to places of interest, such as The Barnes Wetland Centre and Kew Gardens are undertaken to motivate young scientists and to afford them the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills through experiencing exciting and stimulating activities outside of the classroom.
